A home theater that can rival the best of Hollywood can be a mind-blowing experience. But if you’re thinking of turning your spare bedroom into a dedicated cinema, you’ll have to consider a lot more than just the screen and sound system. From building a shell to hide the equipment to seating arranged in movie theater style, there’s a lot to consider.
One of the most important things to consider is a home theater that’s acoustically isolated from the rest of your house. You’ll want to add insulation with a rating of R30 or more, plus extra sound barriers between the rooms in the house that are connected to the home theater room. This will keep the sounds of explosions and roaring monsters from disturbing anyone else in your home.
Also, any light that’s not coming from the screen needs to be blocked or minimized. This includes glare from windows, doors and other surfaces that can degrade the image on the screen. Painting the walls with dark colors, or at least paints with flatter sheens, will help too. Other ambient noises like dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, people in other rooms, plumbing and other kitchen sounds can ruin your viewing enjoyment. A simple way to soundproof a room is to put up new drywall with thicker insulation and acoustic foam. Another good idea is to replace hollow-core door with solid doors, and hang curtains that are heavy enough to block out sound. Other acoustic measures include adding a drop ceiling with acoustic insulation and putting in sound-absorbing soffits, and installing acoustic drywall in the walls.
The most obvious home theater needs are a big screen and sound system. With prices for LCD and Plasma TVs and 4K projectors at record lows, upgrading from an old set-top box or DVD player to a high-resolution, HDR-capable device doesn’t have to break the bank.
A high-quality surround sound system can transform your media room into a true cinema. From a basic setup with left and right speakers to 7.1, or even Dolby Atmos, you can customize your surround sound system to suit your space and your budget.
You’ll need a hub to control all the various devices that are part of your home theater system. We offer a full line of universal remote controls and receivers that make it easy to use all the components in your home theater. Surge protectors and power conditioners are other must-have items that protect your home theater investment from sudden acts of nature that can cause blackouts or surges. And don’t forget the cables — you’ll need at least 16-4 (four-conductor) speaker wires, and a CAT5 control cable to connect your hub to the projector. We only carry the highest quality cables.
